eBay vs Amazon - fashion edition
One day after Amazon launched its first elevated fashion mini site with Derek Lam's 10 Crosby, Neiman Marcus indicated it will be shutting it's eBay store effective immediately. Both e.commerce sites are feeling the pressure to increase their market share of the online fashion business, but Amazon seems to be the front runner of the two.
Understanding the need for a beautiful shopping experience, Amazon has leased a 40,000 square-foot space in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), New York which will serve as a dedicated photo studio. This is in addition to their first TV commercial focused on the category. The company insists their move into this realm isn't about gaining competitive share for the sake of it, "It's oriented to the fact we have rabidly loyal customers, and we want to offer them every category they want to buy," Cathy Beaudoin, Amazon's President of Fashion told WWD last week.
“I’m fascinated by this idea of leading a ‘contemporary life.’ Today, digital is deeply integrated into how we consume and engage with the world around us. Working with Amazon Fashion gave me the freedom to translate our brand into an e-commerce experience that isn’t just about selling our product, but about telling our story to customers,” - Derek Lam
10 Crosby's CEO Jan Schlottmann summarized the value of the deal simply, "We can give Amazon the value of the brand - and they give us the rest". The rest being editorial content, world-class distribution and e.commerce capabilities - all while maintaining the brand's integrity. Visit the 10 Crosby shop here.
Your move, eBay.
