The First Lady Phenomenon

It was a breathtaking moment when China's new First Lady, Peng Liyuan, stepped out of the plane with her husband in Moscow. She stunned in an exquisite dark-blue suit, exuding elegance and earning international media praise

Just like Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton, Peng Liyuan's outfits for public occasions become important diplomatic tools to represent the nation; the strength of soft power evident.  Liyuan was wearing Chinese couture brand, Exception, which has skyrocketed to prominence. The Chinese fashion brand announced that the “First Lady Looks” are not going to be offered in any stores. It is very interesting because J. Crew also retired the pieces that Michelle Obama had worn at last year's inauguration. The largest online shopping website in China, Taobao.com, has already promoted the copy of her coats and handbags at a lower price.  All were quickly sold out.

The Chinese first lady as a fashion icon may influence and promote a greater awareness of Chinese design, elevating the global perception.
