Choosing a magazine cover

There hasn’t been a magazine cover which garnered this much press since, well, Lena Dunham’s cover a couple of months ago. I guess like any piece of marketing, Vogue is tasked with getting their customer’s attention and sending a message – in this case – of cultural relevancy. No longer a fashion-first magazine, with both the Kim Kardashian + Kanye West cover and the much-talked about Lena Dunham cover, Anna Wintour is assserting the magazines societal fluency.

The Kimye cover is beautiful, both looking sophisticated and loving. The Kardashians are a serious force to be reckoned with, not only starring in successful television series, but also launching and managing a variety of fashion and beauty –related businesses.

And we cannot discount the efforts of the couple togther. Both Kanye and Kim are a stronger as one, and are setting the tone and pace for what it is like to be in a modern relationship – from beautiful custom gifts to public proclomations of love. The couple headlines many media sources on a weekly basis.

“Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it. I think we can all agree on the fact that the role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T. (Or perhaps that should be to a K?)”

-Anna Wintour, Vogue Editor-in-Chief[1]

Well said, Ms. Wintour. And while we sometimes still long for the days when covers were chosen months and months in advance, it’s difficult to take away anything from someone who shows true appreciation and thanks for such a rare opportunity.
